The "element of truth" that Pa Adewale and millions like him find in forwarded messages ³⁹⁶ is the hook that makes the lie believable. Yes, politicians sometimes die. Yes, candidates sometimes have legal issues. Yes, elections are sometimes postponed. The lie embeds itself in a matrix of plausible events, then exploits your family's legitimate concerns to force a share.

THE TRUTH: Your family is being weaponized to win a ward.

The family group is not private. It is a frontline. Every forward is a potential deployment of someone else's political strategy. The politician who commissioned that video does not care about your family's Thanksgiving dinner. He cares about your uncle's vote. And if destroying your family's unity is the price of that vote, he will pay it without hesitation. Research Analysis

Research Analysis: They did not need to hack the election. They only needed to hack your family group.

The WhatsApp Group Constitution

Every Nigerian family group should adopt these rules before the next election cycle. Not as restrictions — as protection.

Rule 1: The Verification Pause. No political forward may be shared without a 2-hour waiting period. This allows at least one person to check the claim.

Rule 2: The Source Rule. Every political claim must include its original source. "Forwarded as received" is not a source. It is an admission of irresponsibility.

Rule 3: The Fact-Check Priority. If a Dubawa, Africa Check, or FactCheckHub link is posted in response to a claim, discussion pauses until the fact-check is reviewed.

Rule 4: The Respect Covenant. Fact-checking must be framed as helping, not shaming. "Uncle, let me help verify this" works. "That's fake news, Uncle" starts wars.

Rule 5: The Designated Moderator. Every group needs a moderator empowered to pause, verify, and redirect — without being accused of censorship.

Verification Protocols

The three-source rule: If a claim cannot be confirmed by three independent reputable sources, do not share it.

Reverse image search: Google Images and TinEye can identify when a photo is from a different event, year, or country [^dim04^].

The Dubawa chatbot: Available on WhatsApp. Type a claim, get a fact-check in 5 seconds. Over 1,100 requests answered from 250+ users since its 2024 launch [^dim04^].

The pause principle: Wait 24 hours before sharing emotionally charged political content. Most viral falsehoods are debunked within 12 hours.

Family Reconciliation Protocols

Post-election healing is not automatic. Amaka Okafor has not reconciled with her uncle. The Okonkwo family has not held Thanksgiving since 2026. Reconciliation requires:

1. The acknowledgment: "We were all manipulated. It was not your fault. It was not my fault. It was their strategy."
2. The apology: "I shared things I did not verify. I accused you unfairly. I am sorry."
3. The commitment: "Next election, we verify before we forward. We protect this family before we protect any politician."

Civic Question: Who controls the information in your family group? Who verifies it? If the answer to the second question is "nobody," then the answer to the first question is "whoever paid for the last forward."

What This Means For You

For the Uncle or Auntie Who Forwards Everything

You are not foolish. You are trusting. The people who create fake videos know this. They design content specifically for people like you — people who love their family enough to warn them. But your care is being used against you. Before you forward, ask: who made this? How do I know it's true? What will happen to my family if it's false?

For the Young Person Who Wants to Correct Their Elders

You are not disrespectful for wanting truth. But tone is strategy. "Uncle, I found something interesting about that video" works better than "That's fake news." Your goal is not to win the argument. Your goal is to stop the forward. Choose methods that achieve the goal.

For the Family Group Admin

You hold more power than you know. You can set rules. You can pause conversations. You can designate verification moments. The next election is coming. Will your group be prepared, or will it be another casualty?

For Every Nigerian Voter

The information that reaches you through WhatsApp has been through more hands than you know. Each hand had an interest. Each hand had a motive. Your job is not to trust the chain. Your job is to verify the content — before it passes through your hands to the next link.

Verdict 1: For Family Group Members

Copy and paste into your family group:
"Family, election season is here again. I love this group too much to let fake news destroy it. Can we agree to verify before we forward political content? I am happy to help check anything anyone shares. Let's protect our family first."

Verdict 2: For the Chronic Forwarder

"I have forwarded many things without checking. I am sorry if any of them were false and caused hurt. Going forward, I will verify before I share. If I share something untrue, please correct me — I promise to listen."

Verdict 3: For the Fact-Checker in the Family

"I know my corrections sometimes feel like disrespect. That is never my intention. I fact-check because I love this family and I don't want us to be used by politicians. Let's agree on how to share corrections respectfully."

COLD OPEN: The Ballad of Emeka and Yusuf

They called them the "Aboki-Nna" duo on Adetola Street, Aguda, Surulere.

Emeka was Igbo, Yusuf was Hausa-Fulani, and nobody remembered a time when the two boys were not inseparable. They were seven when Yusuf's father moved his textile shop from Kano to Lagos in 1984. Emeka's father sold electronics three shops down. The boys met over a deflated football, and that was that.

Yusuf spoke Igbo like an Anambra man — tonal bends and all. Emeka could bargain in Hausa at the Tuesday market well enough to get the "brother's price." They played for Rising Stars FC, Surulere: Emeka the striker, fast and impatient; Yusuf the midfielder, patient and calculating. They won the LG Cup in 1992. The trophy still sits in Alhaji Suleiman's sitting room in Kano.

When Yusuf's mother died in 2003, Emeka was the first non-family member at the burial in Kano. He stayed three weeks on the floor of the mourning house. When Emeka's sister had a difficult pregnancy in 2015, Yusuf drove her to LUTH at 2 a.m., paid the deposit from his own account, and stayed until the baby came — a boy they named Chukwuemeka Yusuf.

Forty years. Four decades of friendship that survived dictatorships, crashes, relocations, marriages.

Then came December 2022.

Emeka received a WhatsApp video from his cousin in Onitsha. It showed what the caption claimed was "Hausa-Fulani thugs beating Igbo voters in Kano." The caption: "They will do this nationwide if Tinubu wins. Share to save your family."

Emeka forwarded it to Yusuf: "Is this what your people are planning?"

"Your people." In forty years, Emeka had never called Hausa people "your people." They had always been "our people." Or just "people."

Yusuf watched the video. The men in white kaftans were speaking Yoruba, not Hausa. Lagos accent, not Kano. Dubawa had debunked it three days earlier — it was from a 2019 Lagos chieftaincy dispute. But Yusuf was hurt. So he did something he had never done. He went to his ethnic WhatsApp group, found a video he knew was fake, and forwarded it to Emeka.

The video: "Igbo militants in Anambra burning a mosque." The caption: "This is what Obi's IPOB brothers are doing. If he wins, every mosque in Nigeria will burn."

Emeka watched it at 6:30 a.m. He did not check Dubawa. He did not notice Sudanese license plates in the background. He felt a rage that burned through forty years of friendship in forty seconds.

"So you people have been planning this all along."

"You people? After everything, I am now 'you people'?"

"Your Tinubu will Islamize Nigeria. That Muslim-Muslim ticket is a declaration of war."

"And your Obi is IPOB. Biafra in disguise."

They typed for two hours. Every grievance came pouring out — not from memory, but from WhatsApp. Historical claims neither had verified. Statistics neither had sourced. Videos neither had checked. Each forward from an anonymous "uncle" became ammunition in a war that existed only in their phones.

By 8 a.m., Emeka had blocked Yusuf.

By 9 a.m., Yusuf had left the "Adetola Street Landlords" group they had created together.

By February 2023, they had stopped speaking entirely. Their wives — friends for fifteen years — were told not to visit. Their children were warned to "be careful."

In March 2023, Yusuf moved back to Kano. He said it was for business. It was not.

In January 2025, Yusuf visited Lagos for a wedding. He went to Oyingbo Market to buy tomatoes. Emeka was there buying onions. They saw each other from twenty meters away.

Forty years. Christmas dinners. Football victories. Hospital vigils. Shared grief. Shared joy.

They looked away.

Civic Question If you must choose between your tribe and your brother, who wrote the menu?

1. Colonial Origins: The Architecture of Division

Historical Interpretation

Nigeria as a political entity was born on January 1, 1914, when Lord Frederick Lugard amalgamated the Northern and Southern Protectorates. The motivation was purely economic: the Northern Protectorate had a budget deficit, and the administration sought to use Southern surpluses to offset it ³⁹⁴. Colonial Secretary Lord Harcourt described it as a "marriage" between the "well conducted youth" of the North and the "Southern lady of means" ³⁸⁹. The peoples within these territories were never consulted.

The colonial administration governed through "indirect rule," treating Nigeria's ethnic groups differently by design. In the North, the British ruled through Fulani and Hausa emirs, preserving the Islamic hierarchy ³⁰³. In Yorubaland, existing monarchies were co-opted. In the Southeast, where Igbo societies operated through village democracies without central kings, the British "created" rulers — appointing "warrant chiefs" who were, in historian A.E. Afigbo's words, "opportunists, outcasts, or outright criminals who lacked legitimacy" ³⁰³.

This differential treatment hardened ethnic boundaries where they had once been fluid. As one scholar noted: "The colonial administration is the cradle of ethnicity and ethnic consciousness in Nigeria" ⁴⁹⁶. The British nurtured what one academic called an "'us' vs. 'them,' Muslim vs. Christian, northerner vs. southerner, and Hausa-Fulani vs. Yoruba vs. Igbo syndrome" ⁵⁰⁰.

Verified Fact Nigeria has 371 officially recognized ethnic groups speaking over 500 languages ³⁰¹. The three largest — Hausa-Fulani (29%), Yoruba (21%), and Igbo (18%) — collectively represent approximately 68% of the population, with 368 other groups sharing the remaining 32% ³⁰¹³⁰². Every election, 371 groups are compressed into three blocs, then compressed further into one question: "Is he one of us?"

The British counted people by "tribe," then used those counts to decide who got roads, who got schools, who got posts. Ethnicity became a survival strategy before it became a political identity.

[What This Means For You]

The ethnic division you feel on election day was not born in your village. It was born in the office of a British colonial secretary who could not pronounce your grandfather's town. Every time you vote by tribe, you execute a program written in 1914.

2. Ethnic Voting Patterns: The Data of Division

Verified Fact

Ethnicity remains the single strongest predictor of voting behavior in Nigerian elections.

2015: Buhari (Hausa-Fulani Muslim, APC) defeated Jonathan (Ijaw Christian, PDP). Buhari polled over 75% in the Northwest; Jonathan secured over 85% in the Southeast ³⁴¹. The voting followed stark ethno-regional lines: Buhari dominated northwest and northeast; Jonathan swept south-south and southeast ³⁴¹. Buhari's alliance with Yoruba figure Bola Tinubu was decisive in the Southwest — demonstrating ethnicity as a political tool, not merely a societal divide ³⁴¹.

2019: Both candidates were northern Muslims (Buhari vs. Atiku), yet ethnic factors still dominated. Buhari maintained supremacy in northwest and northeast, while Atiku chose Peter Obi, an Igbo Christian, as his running mate — "an overt strategy to attract southeastern and south-south voters" ³⁴¹. Even when both candidates were Fulani, ethnicity structured the vote.

2023: For the first time, each major ethnic group had a leading candidate — Tinubu (Yoruba, APC), Atiku (Fulani, PDP), and Obi (Igbo, LP) ⁴⁰⁰. Results reflected ethnic bloc voting: "Tinubu securing the South-West, Atiku Abubakar retaining Northern votes, and Peter Obi's Labour Party gaining massive support from the Igbo-dominated South-East" ³⁴⁴. In the North-West, APC polled 2,652,235 votes, PDP 2,329,536, and LP only 350,182 — attributed to "the political consciousness of the Northerners" and the fact that both APC and PDP fielded Hausa-Fulani candidates ¹³⁷.

"Ethnicity remains the most powerful source of political division within the country and voting is still driven by region and ethnicity" ³⁴¹.

Buhari's Southwest wins required Tinubu's ethnic coalition-building. Atiku's Southeast wins relied on Peter Obi as running mate.

Research Analysis The most damning number is 97%. Peter Obi's 97% in the Southeast is not a democratic mandate — it is an ethnic census with ballot papers. No candidate in a genuine democracy wins 97% of any region without the vote being structured by identity rather than policy. The 97% does not prove Obi's popularity. It proves the total success of ethnic programming.

3. The "Othering" Playbook: Eight Narratives That Destroy Nations

Historical Interpretation

The formula is "simple, crude, and effective": "Politicians divide people emotionally, then conquer them politically" ⁴⁶⁶. Identity politics gives politicians "ready-made voter blocs" — eliminating "the need for competence, performance, or accountability" ⁴⁶⁶. "Why show results when you can bank on tribal sentiments? Why build infrastructure when you can build fear?" ⁴⁶⁶

Ethnicity is not primordial but "a political construction by elites who, in attempt to gain political, social and economic favours, present other cultures or groups in bad light" ⁴⁹⁶. Political elites "exploit primordial identities to gain allegiance of the masses, agitate ethnic tensions, and sometimes provoke ethnic violence in order to seize power" ⁴⁹⁶.

The 2023 Lagos gubernatorial election was a textbook case. APC's loss of Lagos to Labour Party in the presidential — Obi's 582,454 to Tinubu's 572,606 — was "the first time since 1999 that Asiwaju Bola Tinubu... lost an election in Lagos" ⁴⁹³. It was perceived as an "existential threat" ⁴⁹⁴. Ethnic narratives framed Obi's candidacy as an "Igbo agenda" to take Lagos ⁴⁹⁴. WhatsApp groups spread claims that Labour's Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour — Yoruba but married to an Igbo woman — intended to empower IPOB and "lay off civil servants in Lagos and hire Igbos" ⁴⁹². Musiliu Akinsanya was filmed telling voters: "'Mama Chukwudi,' if you don't want to vote for us, sit down at home" — using a stereotypical Igbo name to threaten Igbo voters ⁴⁹². Thugs targeted Igbo voters with sticks, knives, and cutlasses ⁴⁹². A UK court later jailed a man for four years for inciting racial hatred against Igbos on social media ⁴⁹³.

The evidence asymmetry is the key: these claims require no proof; their refutation requires evidence most voters never see. A forty-second voice note claiming "Hausa-Fulani plan to Islamize Nigeria" reaches a million people before a three-page academic rebuttal reaches a thousand.

Research Analysis The "othering" playbook preys on genuine trauma: the Biafran War, the 2011 post-election violence, farmer-herder conflicts, Plateau massacres. These are real horrors. But the politician who weaponizes them does not seek to prevent the next horror. He seeks to inherit the fear it produces. Fear is the most renewable resource in Nigerian politics.

4. June 12: The Exception That Proves the Rule

Verified Fact

The June 12, 1993 presidential election remains the single most compelling case that ethnic transcendence is possible — and the tragedy that followed proves why the establishment fears it.

MKO Abiola, a Yoruba Muslim, ran against Bashir Tofa, a Hausa-Muslim from Kano. Abiola won 19 of 30 states with approximately 58% of the vote, defeating Tofa even in Tofa's home state of Kano ³⁴. Results showed remarkable cross-ethnic support: Abiola won Anambra (57.11%), Borno (54.40%), Kaduna (52.20%), Kano (52.28%), and Plateau (61.68%) ³⁴. "About one-third of northerners voted for Abiola, seeing him as being more independent of the military than Tofa" ⁴¹⁶.

Abiola deliberately avoided ethnic appeals. Professor Abdussamad Umar Jibia recounted: "During and before the campaign, Abiola had never mentioned Yoruba, Hausa, Igbo or any of those" ⁴²⁰. Different groups supported him for different reasons: "To the average Northerner, MKO Abiola was a philanthropist, a Muslim... To Christians, MKO Abiola was a liberal Muslim... To the Yoruba, he was a Yoruba man" ⁴²⁰.

The military annulment and subsequent ethnic polarization reveal what happens when ethnicity is transcended. The Yoruba establishment "saw it as a tribal war" ⁴²⁰. "The Hausa man, whatever that means, was considered the enemy" ⁴²⁰.

Historical Interpretation Abiola proved Nigerians can vote beyond tribe. The annulment proved the establishment feared it. When Nigerian politics produces a genuinely cross-ethnic mandate, the forces invested in ethnic division move to destroy it.

5. Post-2015 Polarization: The Mathematics of Exclusion

Verified Fact

Former lawmaker Matthew Seiyefa was removed as DG of the SSS and replaced with Yusuf Bichi, who proceeded to "overfill the SSS with people from his northern region" ³⁸⁶.

The U.S. State Department's 2020 Human Rights Report confirmed "overarching favouritism in handing out important federal positions to particular ethnic groups" ³⁸⁶. HURIWA accused Buhari of "deep-rooted nepotism and favouritism... he prefers his fellow Fulani/Hausa northern Muslims" for strategic positions ³⁸⁶.

Buhari's government "mismanaged Nigeria's rich diversity and wittingly or unwittingly made ethnicity a determinant factor in the questions of who gets what, when and how" ³⁴³. "Look. December 14, 2022. My cousin from Onitsha sent this video to our family group. Everybody was saying 'this is what they are planning.' I believed it because... I had seen other videos. Because my cousin would not lie. Because deep down, part of me wanted to believe the Hausa-Fulani were the enemy."

Why?

"Buhari. Eight years. Zero Igbo appointments. Zero. Every policy felt like punishment for being Igbo. So when Obi came, it felt like finally, our turn. And when people said the North would never allow it, I believed them. It made me feel like a fighter instead of a victim."

He shows photos. Yusuf at his daughter's wedding, wearing isi Agu fabric, dancing ekpe. Emeka at Yusuf's father's 80th birthday in Kano, eating tuwo shinkafa while Yusuf's nieces braided his daughter's hair.

"And I threw it away. For what? For a video that was fake. For a politician who does not know my name. For Obi, who won Anambra by 97% and then what? Is Anambra better? Look around — no light, no water, potholes everywhere. Obi did not fix my street. Tinubu did not fix my street. But I lost my brother because of them."

Did he try to reach Yusuf?

"Pride. And fear. What if he does not want to hear from me? What if he believes the things I said? I accused him of supporting genocide. I accused his people of wanting to kill my people. My people. Since when did I have 'my people' separate from Yusuf?"

"I was buying onions. He was buying tomatoes. Twenty meters. I remembered everything — his mother burying my mother-in-law, the hospital, the football, the children. And I thought: if I walk to him, what do I say? 'Sorry I chose a politician I never met over a brother I knew for forty years?' The words were too big. So I looked away. And he looked away."

He cries, quietly.

"Do you know the worst part? I don't even know who made that video. Some boy in a laptop cafe, paid five thousand naira to forward hatred. He got his five thousand. And I got this." He gestures at the empty chair where Yusuf used to sit. "A trophy and no brother to share it with."

His message to readers:

"Check the video. Before you forward it. Before you accuse your brother. Dubawa. Africa Check. Google reverse image search. Two minutes to save forty years. But also ask yourself: why do I want to believe this? Who benefits when I hate him? Because I can tell you who does not benefit. Me. Yusuf. Our street. Nigeria. The only people who benefit are the politicians who get our votes and give us darkness."

"You know what this says? 'Rising Stars FC — Best Team.' Not 'Best Igbo Team.' Best Team. Nigeria could be a team. But we have to decide. And I failed. Don't be like me."

For all the data on division, there is a parallel story of integration in markets, marriages, movements, and daily Nigerian life.

Inter-ethnic marriage is perhaps the most powerful rejection of division. Studies confirm it has "emerged as a significant force for unity, peace, and understanding" ⁴⁹⁷. Margaret Kwa'ada Julius, married to a Yoruba man for over two decades: "My grandmother was a Fulani woman married to a Kilba man. This legacy inspires my commitment" ⁴⁹⁷. Every inter-ethnic marriage produces children who literally embody the failure of ethnic division.

#EndSARS (October 2020) demonstrated that shared grievance transcends ethnicity. Young Nigerians across all groups united against police brutality. The Yoruba slogan "Soro Soke" became a national battle cry used by Igbo, Hausa, and minority youth. For three weeks, tribe did not matter. Generation did.

Everyday market integration is the most powerful counter-narrative. Lagos "houses significant populations of all three major groups plus dozens of minority ethnicities" ³⁰¹. Your mechanic does not care if you are Igbo when your car breaks down at 11 p.m. on Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. Your doctor does not care if you are Hausa when you are bleeding. Your children's teacher does not care if you are Yoruba when she stays late to help. The people who make Nigeria work operate across ethnic lines every day. The only people who need ethnic division are those who want your vote, not your welfare.

9. The Hate Speech Industrial Complex

CITAD recorded 6,258 hate speeches in six months between June and December 2016 ³⁹⁷. That is 34 per day, every day. Driven by "unemployment, hunger and poverty" — the raw materials from which politicians forge ethnic weapons ³⁹⁷.

The legal framework exists but is a dead letter. Section 24 of the Cyber Crime Act (2015) criminalizes grossly offensive messages ³⁹⁰. The Electoral Act prohibits ethnically abusive campaign language ³⁹⁰. A 2019 Hate Speech Bill proposed life imprisonment — but was rejected ³⁹⁵. Despite all this, "no significant prosecutions have been carried out" ³⁸⁴. Hate speech has been "elevated to the status of political campaign strategy" ³⁸⁸. The politician who uses ethnic hatred faces better odds than the politician who proposes policy reform. Hate is cheaper than ideas. Division is easier than development. The Nigerian state, by its refusal to prosecute, is a silent partner in every ethnic incitement.

The 2023 Lagos aftermath showed the deadly convergence of strategy, social media, and hatred. When Obi defeated Tinubu in Lagos, anti-Igbo rhetoric surged ⁴⁹². Thugs targeted Igbo voters ⁴⁹². Does every Igbo village get electricity when an Igbo man is governor? Political elites of all tribes share economic interests. Their voters share poverty. The ethnic dividend is zero.

Layer three — the surrender: Voting by tribe is not survival. It is surrender — of your individual judgment to an identity constructed by colonial administrators. It is surrender of your children's future to a politician who knows he need only be "one of us" to win.

THE TRUTH: Your tribe wins elections but loses electricity.

Every four years, Nigeria conducts an ethnic census disguised as an election. Results are predictable with 85% accuracy from demographics alone ³⁴¹. Winners celebrate. Losers mobilize grievance. And between elections, nobody builds the road. Nobody fixes the school. Nobody provides the water.

The ethnic voting machine produces governments accountable to tribe, not citizens. A government that wins 97% of a region regardless of performance has no incentive to improve that region. Ethnic voting creates a perverse incentive: perform badly, play the ethnic card, win again, perform worse, win again.

Your tribe did not create poverty. A political system did. Voting by tribe preserves that system.

Tinubu himself stated: "In 1993, Nigerians embraced Chief MKO Abiola and a fellow Muslim, Baba Gana Kingibe as running mate in certainly one of our fairest elections ever held. The spirit of 1993 is upon us once more in 2023" ³³.

But as analysts noted, "the Nigeria of then, three decades ago, is not the same as now. The ethnoreligious divide in Nigeria now is at an all-time high" ³².

Historical Interpretation The electoral results bore this out. Despite Tinubu being a Yoruba man from the Southwest, the APC in Osun State garnered only 343,945 votes against the PDP's 354,366. The Labour Party swept the Christian-dominated Southeast and most South-South states ²¹. The Muslim-Muslim ticket cost the APC significant Christian votes, even in the Southwest.

The controversy has persisted into Tinubu's presidency. Following President Trump's January 2026 designation of Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern over Christian persecution, "debates over the implications of a Muslim-Muslim presidential ticket... resurfaced," with calls for Shettima to be replaced by a Christian ahead of 2027 ³⁴.

Civic Question The Muslim-Muslim ticket forces a question that Nigerian democracy has never fully answered: Is religious balancing a necessary safeguard for national unity, or does it institutionalize the very religious divisions it seeks to manage?

The Prosperity Gospel and the Political Collection Plate

Verified Fact The explosive growth of Pentecostal Christianity in Nigeria, and particularly the "prosperity gospel" variant, has created unique conditions for political mobilization. Research from the London School of Economics found that while Pentecostal churches promise economic and spiritual rewards, critics see them as "contributing to a political culture that perpetuates inequality" [^dim02^]²⁴.

The prosperity gospel interprets "the accumulation of wealth as evidence of a believer's faith and God's blessing" ²⁴. This creates a natural affinity with political candidates who can present themselves as successful and "blessed." As one researcher noted, "the moral legitimacy provided to elites if they donate significant sums to their churches mitigates Pentecostalism's potential to radically reshape Nigeria's political culture" ²⁴.

Verified Fact The financial flows between politics and Pentecostalism are substantial. In July 2025, Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara announced a donation of 500 million naira ($326,000) during a service at St. Cyprian's Anglican Church ²⁵. FCT Minister Nyesom Wike organized a thanksgiving service at Saint James Anglican Church Abuja during which he solicited support for Tinubu and denounced political opposition — prompting the church vicar to describe him as "a child of destiny and an Anglican man shining the light of God" ²⁵.

The Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion) responded in July 2025 by publishing guidelines prohibiting politicians from delivering political speeches in churches. Primate Henry Ndukuba declared: "The Church must remain a place of spiritual refuge, not a platform for partisan messaging" ²⁵.

Verified Fact The Electoral Act 2022 attempts to address this. Section 92(3) states: "Places designated for religious worship, police stations and public offices shall not be used for political campaigns, rallies and processions; or to promote, propagate or attack political parties, candidates or their programmes or ideologies" ²⁶. The prohibition is widely ignored.

Research Analysis The church was the original paid influence platform. Before Instagram bloggers, before WhatsApp broadcasters, before TikTok influencers, there was the Sunday service where the governor sat in the front row, where his donation was announced from the pulpit, where the pastor later endorsed the party that funded the new auditorium. The payment was called a "seed offering." The endorsement was called a "prophecy." The transaction was called "ministry."

When Governor Fubara donates ₦500 million during a service and the vicar calls him "a child of destiny," that is not spontaneous spiritual discernment. That is customer service.

WHAT THIS MEANS FOR YOU

The next time a politician visits your church, watch the sequence. Does he give a testimony, or a campaign speech? Does the pastor pray for him, or endorse him? Is the donation announced as generosity, or is it a down payment on your congregation's votes? The Electoral Act says political campaigns belong outside houses of worship. Your pastor knows this. The question is whether he cares.

The Lie and The Truth

THE LIE: "God chose this candidate. To vote against him is to vote against God's will."

Deconstruction: Civic Question

THE QUESTION: This claim requires no evidence — by definition, divine revelation cannot be verified. It removes the voter's obligation to evaluate policies, records, or competence. It replaces democratic deliberation with spiritual coercion. It transforms elections — the mechanism by which citizens hold leaders accountable — into coronations ordained from above.

The pastors who make this claim do not provide evidence of divine communication. No recordings. No written transcripts. No independent verification. Just "the Lord told me" — four words that grant absolute authority while requiring zero accountability.

If the pastor is wrong — if the candidate he anoints performs terribly — the pastor faces no consequence. He does not refund the political donation. He does not apologize to the congregation whose lives worsened. He finds a new biblical analogy and waits for the next election.

THE TRUTH: God gave you a brain to inspect candidates.

Theological foundation: The same Bible these pastors cite contains repeated commands to use discernment, wisdom, and judgment.

• Proverbs 18:17 — "The first to plead his cause seems right, until his neighbor comes and examines him." The Bible commands cross-examination, not passive acceptance.
• 1 John 4:1 — "Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God." The Bible commands skepticism of spiritual claims.
• Acts 17:11 — The Bereans "received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so." The Bible praises fact-checkers.
• 1 Thessalonians 5:21 — "Test all things; hold fast what is good." Grace Oladipo's verse. The command to test is not rebellion. It is obedience.

Historical Interpretation

The text praises fact-checkers If God wanted to appoint a president, He would not need an election. He would not need voter registration. He would not need INEC, polling units, or ballot papers. He gave us elections precisely because He wants us to choose — using the minds He gave us, evaluating the records candidates present, and accepting the responsibility of judgment.

The pastor who claims to speak for God in electoral matters speaks for himself. He speaks for his donors. He speaks for his building fund. He does not speak for the God who commanded you to think.

Action: Faith-Neutral Civic Engagement

The Faithful Voter's Checklist

Before you vote, ask these questions — not instead of your faith, but because of it:

1. Does this candidate's manifesto match my values? Not his religion. His policies. What does he actually plan to do?
2. What is this candidate's record? Not his church attendance. His management history. What has he built? What has he destroyed?
3. Would I vote for this candidate if he were from a different religion? If the answer is no, you are not voting on faith. You are voting on tribe or creed.
4. Does my pastor benefit from this endorsement? Follow the money. Follow the access. Follow the building project donations.
5. If this candidate fails, who bears the cost? Your pastor will apologize with a new sermon series. You will bear the consequences of bad governance.

Questions for the Pulpit

If your pastor endorses a candidate, ask respectfully:

• "Pastor, what is this candidate's education policy?"
• "Pastor, what is this candidate's record on healthcare delivery?"
• "Pastor, did this candidate's foundation donate to our church building project?"
• "Pastor, if this candidate fails to deliver, will you publicly acknowledge that the prophecy was incorrect?"
• "Pastor, does 1 Thessalonians 5:21 apply to pastoral endorsements?"

These questions are not attacks. They are applications of the biblical command to test all things.

The "Render unto Caesar" Principle

The separation of eternal faith from temporal politics is not secularism. It is Christianity — directly from Christ's mouth. "Render therefore unto Caesar the things which are Caesar's; and unto God the things that are God's" (Matthew 22:21). Caesar's image was on the coin. God's image is on you. The candidate's manifesto belongs to Caesar's realm. Your conscience belongs to God's.

Verified Fact The Anglican Church of Nigeria's 2025 guidelines represent the most significant institutional attempt to depoliticize the pulpit. They bar politicians from addressing congregations during services, restrict the pulpit to ordained ministers, and warn clergy against offering "excessive praise or endorsements of political visitors" ²⁵.

Push your denomination to adopt similar guidelines. Demand transparency about political donations to religious bodies. Ask your church leadership to disclose whether candidates or parties have contributed to building projects, programs, or pastoral support.

Citizen Verdict: Your Action Items

Verdict 1: For the Church Member

Copy and paste this message into your church WhatsApp group:

"Good morning brothers and sisters. As we approach the election, I want to remind us of 1 Thessalonians 5:21 — Test all things; hold fast what is good. This includes pastoral endorsements. Let's research every candidate's policies, records, and manifestos. Our faith commands us to think, not just to follow. God bless us all."

Verdict 2: For the Pastor

If you are a religious leader reading this, consider:

"I will not endorse any candidate from the pulpit. I will encourage my congregation to research every candidate's policies and records. I will teach the biblical principles of justice, stewardship, and accountability — and trust my members to apply them at the ballot box. I will refuse political donations that compromise my spiritual independence."

Verdict 3: For the Interfaith Bridge-Builder

Copy and paste this invitation:

"I am organizing a Muslim-Christian voter education meeting on [DATE] at [LOCATION]. We will not discuss which candidate to support. We will discuss how to evaluate candidates based on competence, integrity, and record — regardless of their religion. All faiths welcome. DM me if interested."

Verdict 4: The Personal Pledge

Sign this pledge personally:

"I, ____, pledge that I will vote based on a candidate's record, policies, and competence — not on their religion or my pastor's endorsement. I will research every claim made from any pulpit. I will ask questions even when it is uncomfortable. I will render unto Caesar what is Caesar's, and keep my conscience free for God."

Your pastor cannot choose your president for the same reason he cannot choose your spouse — because you are the one who must live with the consequences. Nigeria has not counted its religious population since 1963, yet pastors and imams claim to speak for majorities they cannot measure. The "Yes Daddy" scandal revealed candidates treating bishops as political constituency managers. ₦500 million church donations produce "children of destiny" endorsements. Every biblical analogy applied to a candidate is a shortcut around policy analysis. Test all things — including the pulpit. Hold fast what is good — especially your independent mind.

COLD OPEN: The CNN Interview, The Offer, The First Post, The Blocking, The 3 a.m.

October 2020. Lekki Toll Gate, Lagos.

Dele stood at the barricade with 50,000 strangers, chanting, singing, holding up phones like torches against the dark. He was 24. He had never been to a protest before. His mother called three times. "Come home, these people will kill you." He didn't come home. When the thugs arrived at Alausa, he tweeted a video: "They came with machetes. We came with our phones. Guess which one the world is watching?" — 50,000 retweets. CNN called the next morning.

The interview lasted four minutes. He wore a black t-shirt that said #EndSARS. He looked straight into the camera and said: "We are the generation that will change Nigeria. We are not asking for permission." Verified Fact That clip circled the world. His followers jumped from 12,000 to 180,000 in 48 hours. His DMs exploded with love, with thank-yous, with marriage proposals, with strangers sending him money for data.

That was October 2020.

November 2022. Victoria Island, Lagos.

The meeting happened at a restaurant where the cheapest main course cost more than his mother's monthly rent in Egbeda. The man who sat across from him wore a white senator and no visible political branding. He said he worked for "a governorship campaign" and had been following Dele's work since EndSARS. "You have authenticity," the man said. "Young people trust you. That's rare."

The number was ₦2 million per month. Cash. No contract. No tax deduction. "Just be yourself," the man said. "But be positive about our guy. You don't have to attack anyone. Just... redirect the energy."

Dele's mother was in LASUTH with kidney failure. The dialysis bill was ₦85,000 per session. She needed two sessions a week. His father was dead. His sister was in NYSC. There was nobody else.

He said yes.

December 2022. His apartment, Yaba.

The first post was the hardest. He stared at the draft for three hours. It was about "youth inclusion" in the candidate's manifesto. Every word was true — the manifesto did mention youth inclusion. What he didn't mention was that he had been paid to mention it. The post got 8,000 retweets. The comments filled with trust: "Dele knows what he's talking about." "If Dele says this guy is different, I believe it." "Finally, an activist who understands politics."

He vomited after he posted it. Then he checked his account balance. Then he posted again.

January 2023.

The content shifted gradually, the way a frog boils. One week it was policy praise. The next week it was a comparison video — "my guy vs. the other guy." By February he was running a network of 34 WhatsApp broadcasters, sending them scripts every morning, tracking their engagement, paying them from his own budget. The opposition found his phone number. The death threats started at 2 a.m. — anonymous calls, heavy breathing, then: "We know where your mother sleeps."

His former EndSARS friends noticed. First the subtweets. Then the threads. Then the direct messages. "Dele, what happened to us?" "Bro, you're working for the system." "You marched with us at Lekki and now you're defending these people?"

He blocked the ones who posted publicly. He muted the ones who DM'd. He told himself he was protecting his mental health. What he was protecting was the lie.

March 2023. 3 a.m.

Dele sat on the edge of his bed in the dark. His phone glowed with notifications — 14 new threats, 3 blocked former friends posting screenshots of his old EndSARS tweets side by side with his current campaign posts, and one message from his campaign handler: "Great work tonight. Bonus hits account tomorrow."

He opened his old CNN interview. Watched himself say: "We are the generation that will change Nigeria."

The young man on the screen looked like a stranger. Younger. Stupider. Braver.

"I didn't sell out," Dele said to nobody. The ceiling fan creaked. His mother's dialysis machine beeped from the next room — he had brought her to stay with him, away from Egbeda, away from the men who knew where she slept. "I bought in."

The ₦2 million paid for the dialysis. It paid for her medication. It also paid for the silence of his conscience — a more expensive machine, and one that required daily maintenance.

1. The Influencer Landscape: Who Sells Politics in Nigeria

Nigeria's political influencer economy is not a side hustle. It is an industry — structured, tiered, and monetized with the precision of any other marketing vertical. The people who shape what you think about candidates are not necessarily people who believe in those candidates. They are people who have been paid to make you believe. Verified Fact

The BBC's landmark 2023 investigation, developed in partnership with the Centre for Democracy and Development (CDD), exposed the financial architecture of this industry in devastating detail. A politician identified only as "Godiya" admitted on camera: "We've paid an influencer up to 20 million naira [approximately $45,000] for delivering a result." She added that influencers were also offered government appointments — "be a board member, be a special assistant" — in lieu of cash ⁵⁵⁰[^dim03^].

Verified Fact The CDD found that senior influencers — those active in 2,000 to 3,000 WhatsApp groups simultaneously — could command ₦200,000 to ₦500,000 monthly, with top operatives earning up to $500,000 monthly in strategic campaign roles ³¹⁴[^dim03^]. These are not hobbyists. These are political mercenaries with spreadsheets.

The elite tier includes household names — comedians, musicians, actors, bloggers. Tunde Ednut, Linda Ikeji, and Daniel Regha charge "₦1 million or more per post" for political content, according to TechCabal ⁵⁴⁸[^dim03^]. Comedians like Mr. Jollof (who branded himself "BATTIFIED" for Tinubu), Seyi Law, and AY Makun became prominent political voices during the 2023 cycle ⁵¹¹[^dim03^]. Musicians from P-Square endorsed Peter Obi, while Brymo Olawale faced backlash for his pro-Tinubu stance and controversial ethnic comments ⁵¹²[^dim03^].

But the most consequential category is the tier nobody sees.

2. The Invisible Army: WhatsApp Broadcasters and Dark Social

While celebrities grab headlines, WhatsApp broadcasters win wards.

Verified Fact The BBC investigation found that a single political influencer could manage 2,000 to 3,000 WhatsApp groups simultaneously — reaching hundreds of thousands of voters through encrypted, private channels that no fact-checker can monitor ⁵⁵⁰[^dim03^]. The CDD documented that "WhatsApp remains the medium through which all social media content really circulates widely, through cross-posting and screenshots from other platforms" ³¹⁴[^dim03^].

Samuel Olaniran's research at the University of Witwatersrand describes the elaborate "human infrastructure" Nigerian political parties built on WhatsApp: "campaign teams established WhatsApp groups for each state and cascaded messages through coordinators and subgroups to reach the grassroots" ³²¹[^dim03^]. These networks circulated "fabricated stories, doctored videos, and emotive voice notes designed to inflame suspicion and resentment" — painting Tinubu/Shettima as part of an "Islamist plot to 'Islamise' the country," while Peter Obi was "framed as sympathetic to the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB)" ³²¹[^dim03^].

The critical insight is this: WhatsApp's encryption doesn't just protect privacy. It protects the paid origin of political content. When a message arrives in your family group from your uncle, you don't see the political PR firm that wrote the script, the influencer who distributed it, or the cash that changed hands. The next time you see a "concerned citizen" post in your WhatsApp group, ask: who wrote this? Who paid for it? Who benefits from your anger? The answer is never "nobody." In Nigerian politics, every voice has a price tag — especially the ones that sound free.

3. The Activism-to-Influence Pipeline: How EndSARS Became a Recruitment Fair

The #EndSARS protests of October 2020 were the most significant youth mobilization in Nigerian history. They were also the most significant talent scouting exercise in Nigerian political history.

Verified Fact The protests demonstrated the raw political power of Nigerian youth organized through social media. Interviewees in academic research identified Tunde Ednut, Linda Ikeji, and Falz as vital amplifiers whose platforms "spread this EndSARS protest across the globe" ⁵²³[^dim03^]. Falz and Mr. Macaroni "were constantly posting — their visibility gave many the courage to join and share" ⁵²³[^dim03^]. The movement was organic, decentralized, and — critically — unpaid.

Political parties watched. They took notes. They made lists.

Then they made offers.

As Victor Ejechi wrote in Premium Times: "The irony is that these paid conversations borrow the same energy once used by organic movements like #EndSARS or the feminist collective, but instead of amplifying genuine civic voices, they mimic that grassroots aesthetic for profit and political gain" ⁵³²[^dim03^].

The pipeline is straightforward:

1. Organic protest builds authentic following and credibility
2. Post-protest fragmentation leaves activists with platforms but no movement
3. Political approaches offer financial security for "just being yourself"
4. Gradual content shift turns advocacy into advertising
5. Audience betrayal converts trust into votes for paying candidates

Verified Fact Rinu Oduala (SavvyRinu), one of the first real organizers of #EndSARS protests in Lagos, was identified by ODI research as one of the "new influencers" who had become "popular around the #EndSARS movement" and central to Peter Obi's online campaign ⁵⁶⁸[^dim03^]. Aisha Yesufu, after a decade as one of Nigeria's most respected activists — co-founding #BringBackOurGirls — announced in 2026 that she was "taking advocacy into politics" by joining a political party to contest for Senate ⁵⁵²[^dim03^].

The trajectory is clear: protest credibility translates into political influence, and political influence becomes valuable to campaigns seeking authentic youth connection. The activist who once spoke truth to power now speaks power's talking points — and calls it strategy.

Research Analysis

The pattern is unmistakable. The same voices that praised one candidate in 2019 praised a different one in 2023 — always with the same certainty, always with the same passion, always without disclosure of who paid for the certainty.

4. Political PR Firms: The Influence Architects

Behind every paid influencer post is a PR firm writing the script, negotiating the fee, and measuring the engagement. Nigeria's political PR industry is not ancillary to electoral politics. It is electoral politics in digital form.

Brooks + Blake

Positioned explicitly as a "perception management" agency, Brooks + Blake "handles political campaigns, corporate PR, and crisis communication" with clients including the Dangote Group and Lagos State Government ⁵¹³[^dim03^]. Their principal partner stated: "At B+B, we believe perception makes all the difference" ⁵⁶⁹[^dim03^]. In the world of political PR, "perception management" is a polite term for "making voters believe what we need them to believe." Verified Fact

Kong Marketing Agency

This Lagos-based firm openly advertises "Political PR" services, noting that "Political parties in Nigeria have realized their success is tied to how they communicate with the general public. Our strategies PR enables Politicians in Nigeria influence public opinion" ⁵¹⁵[^dim03^]. Kong offers "celebrity influencer campaigns" as part of its political packages — explicitly connecting talent to partisan messaging.

Media Panache Nigeria

Led by Timilehin Bello, this "youthful, social-media-driven PR agency" works with brands like MTN Foundation and Dubai Tourism Nigeria, using "lifestyle storytelling and influencer strategies" ⁵¹³[^dim03^]. The crossover from commercial lifestyle marketing to political lifestyle marketing is seamless — the same techniques that sell phones sell candidates.

The Operational Model

Verified Fact As Toyosi Godwin confirmed to TechCabal, "most of the time influencers are approached with pre-written tweets which they post upon payment of the agreed fee. Even when the influencer writes the post by themself, the contractor must edit it before they can share it with their followers" ⁵⁴⁸[^dim03^]. Multiple strategists working for the same party operate in silos, meaning "each one may use any method they see fit without interference, even if they are unethical" ⁵⁴⁸[^dim03^].

This is the factory floor of political influence. The candidate doesn't need to believe the message. The influencer doesn't need to believe the message. The PR firm doesn't believe the message. Only the voter is expected to believe — and to vote accordingly. Research Analysis

Victor Afolabi of GDM Group described the 2023 election as "one of the most profitable projects we have managed in the last twenty-four months" — not through traditional media, but through "influencer marketing," "opinion-shaping," and "sentiment analysis" tools ⁵⁵³[^dim03^]. Your vote was their profit center.

5. "Hate for Hire": When Trolling Becomes a Career

The influencer economy has a toxic twin: the paid troll economy.

Verified Fact The CDD documented growing use of "troll farms, and coordinated groups of bots promoting specific narratives" in 2023 ³²⁴[^dim03^]. Tactics included "flooding hashtags to drown out opposing voices," "buying unused accounts" to appear organic, and operating multiple accounts where "one person controls them all" to simulate organic conversation ³¹⁴[^dim03^].

The EU Election Observation Mission found that "influential members of lead parties regularly spread unverified or even false information targeting the opponents" and that "false narratives constructed based on ethnic or religious sentiments were effectively conveyed using simple images/videos" ⁵⁵⁸[^dim03^]. The result was that "dangerous ethnic-based language, perceived as a form of hate speech in the Nigerian context, appeared in comments sections on various platforms" ⁵⁵⁸[^dim03^].

The #DefendLagos Campaign: A Case Study in Manufactured Hate

Following Peter Obi's surprise victory in Lagos State — Tinubu's home base — a coordinated campaign emerged to demonize Igbo residents. Research by Daily Trust documented how "the APC resorted to using social media to stir ethnic appeal and spread hate speech against the Igbos" ahead of the gubernatorial election ⁵⁶⁵[^dim03^]. APC presidential campaign spokesperson Bayo Onanuga tweeted that "2023 should mark the end of Igbo interference in Lagos politics" — a post that received approximately 5.5 million views ⁵⁶⁵[^dim03^]. The coordinated hashtag #DefendLagos received ~6,100 mentions, while #YorubaJobsforYorubapeople reached ~13,400 mentions ⁵⁶⁵[^dim03^].

A manipulated image of someone waving a Biafran flag in Lagos — the person was superimposed onto a bank photo — went viral ⁵⁶⁵[^dim03^]. LSE research documented "tribalising tactics employed to polarise the election situation, perpetuate ethnic stereotypes, and create divisions among Nigeria's ethnic groups" ⁵⁶⁷[^dim03^]. A preacher warned Muslims against voting for "infidels" like Peter Obi ⁵⁶⁷[^dim03^].

This was not organic outrage. It was manufactured hatred — produced by political PR firms, distributed by paid influencers, amplified by anonymous accounts, and consumed by voters who believed they were witnessing genuine community anger. Research Analysis

What This Means For You

When you see a hashtag trending with ethnic hatred, ask: who started it? Who benefits from this division? The answer is never the ethnic group being "defended." The answer is always the politician who needs your fear to win your vote.

6. The BBC Revelation: "It Is a Game"

The BBC's January 2023 investigation — "The Nigerian influencers paid to manipulate your vote" — remains the definitive journalistic account of this industry ³²⁶[^dim03^].

The investigation found:

• Political parties secretly pay influencers "cash, lavish gifts, government contracts and even political appointments" ³²⁶[^dim03^]
• Payments happen "mostly in cash to avoid a paper trail" ⁵⁵⁰[^dim03^]
• Parties operate "situation rooms" where they "monitor how false narratives assigned to influencers were performing" ⁵⁵⁰[^dim03^]
• One influencer with nearly 150,000 Facebook followers admitted being paid to post "completely false stories about political opponents" — but rather than posting directly, he "plants false stories through other micro-influencers he hires" to create layers of deniability ⁵⁵⁰[^dim03^]

When the BBC asked politician "Godiya" whether paying influencers to spread disinformation was ethical, she replied: "It is a game. Somebody had to win, and God help me, I will not be on the losing side." ⁵⁵⁰[^dim03^]

That sentence contains the entire moral architecture of the influencer economy. Democracy is not deliberation. It is competition. Truth is not a constraint. It is a handicap. And the person who controls the feed controls the outcome. Research Analysis

Idayat Hassan of the Centre for Democracy and Development told the BBC that these activities amount to "political interference" that is "undermining trust in democracy, undermining trust in the electoral system, and... instigating conflict" ⁵⁵⁰[^dim03^].

FORENSIC WITNESS: "Dele" — The Activist Who Took the Money

"Dele" is a pseudonym. He is 28 years old. Between October 2020 and March 2023, he went from EndSARS protest organizer to paid political influencer. He agreed to speak on condition of anonymity. What follows is his account, edited for clarity, with corroborating details verified against BBC and CDD research findings.

THE PROTEST

"I didn't plan to become an activist. October 8, 2020, I saw a tweet about police killing someone in Delta. I tweeted about it. The next day I was at Alausa. By October 11 I was sleeping at the toll gate. I had never slept outside in my life. My mother thought I was dead — I didn't charge my phone for two days.

The CNN thing happened because a producer DMed me. They wanted a 'young Nigerian voice.' I didn't prepare. I just said what I felt. When I watched it back, I didn't recognize myself. That guy was so... sure. He really believed Nigeria could change. I want to meet him again. I think I owe him an apology."

THE FRAGMENTATION

"After Lekki, everything broke. Some people wanted to keep protesting. Some wanted to go into politics. Some wanted to build NGOs. Some just disappeared — trauma, depression, you know how it is.

I tried to keep the energy going. I tweeted about police reform, about governance, about youth participation. But the engagement dropped. People were tired. 2021 was a hard year. By mid-2022 I was borrowing money for data. My mother's health was getting worse. I started thinking: what if all this passion doesn't pay rent?"

THE APPROACH

"It came through a mutual friend. A guy I knew from protest days said a 'campaign team' wanted to talk. I thought they meant volunteer work. When they said ₦2 million a month, I laughed. I thought it was a joke.

The meeting was at a restaurant in VI. The man was nice. Professional. He said: 'We don't want you to lie. We just want you to see the good in our candidate. Every candidate has good points. Find them and talk about them. Be yourself.'

I asked for 24 hours. I called my sister. She said: 'Dele, Mummy will die without dialysis.' I called three friends from EndSARS. Two said don't do it. One said: 'Everyone is selling something. At least be honest about what you're selling.'

I did it for my mother. That's what I tell myself. But my mother didn't make me write those attack threads. My mother didn't make me coordinate those WhatsApp broadcasters. I did that myself. For the bonus."

THE WORK

"The first month was easy. I posted positive things about the candidate's manifesto. Youth employment, tech hubs, student loans — I could genuinely support those things. I didn't feel dirty.

The second month they wanted comparisons. 'Our guy vs. their guy.' I had to find flaws in the opposition candidate. Some were real flaws. Some were... exaggerated. I told myself every campaign does this.

The third month they sent me a video. It was edited to make the opposition candidate look like he was supporting separatists. I knew it was misleading. I posted it anyway. That night I made a bonus of ₦500,000. I bought my mother a new wheelchair.

By January 2023 I was managing 34 WhatsApp broadcasters. I wrote their scripts every morning. 'Good morning patriots. Today's talking points...' I trained them on engagement tactics. 'Don't just forward. Add a personal note. Make it feel like your own opinion.'

I was teaching people how to pretend. And I was good at it."

THE BLOCKING

"My EndSARS friends found out gradually. First the subtweets. 'Some people marched for change and now they're selling hope for retweets.' Then someone posted a side-by-side: my October 2020 tweet about police brutality next to my February 2023 tweet defending the candidate's security record.

I blocked the public critics first. Then the DMers. Then the ones who just stopped liking my posts. Each block felt like self-defense. Each block was actually evidence destruction.

The worst was a girl I met at Lekki. We held hands at the barricade when the soldiers came. She sent me one message: 'You survived the toll gate to become this?' I blocked her without replying. I couldn't survive the reply."

THE 3 A.M.

"The death threats started in February. Anonymous numbers. 'We know your mother is in Yaba.' 'Your sister's NYSC lodge is in Ogun.' I moved my mother to my apartment. Bought a generator for her dialysis machine. Kept a machete under my bed. I'm not a machete person. I'm a laptop person.

The opposition had their own influencers. Their own trolls. Everyone was playing the same game. That's what nobody tells you — it's not good guys vs. bad guys. It's bad guys vs. bad guys, and the voters are the ball.

Election night I sat in my apartment with my mother's machine beeping and my phone buzzing with results. My candidate won. The bonus hit my account the next morning — ₦3 million victory payment. I took my mother to dinner. She asked why I was crying. I said I was happy.

I made ₦15 million total. I would pay ₦50 million to undo it. Not because the money was bad. Because the person who earned it is someone I can't look at in the mirror. That guy on CNN in October 2020 — he would hate who I became. And I can't even defend myself to him. What would I say? 'Your mother needed dialysis?' He would say: 'And so you sold the trust of everyone who believed in you?' He would be right.

The worst part isn't the guilt. The worst part is how normal it became. By March, posting paid content felt like posting anything else. That's the machine. It doesn't just buy your voice. It buys your capacity to be disgusted with yourself."

Civic Question If your mother's life depended on taking money to mislead people you love, what would you do? And if you took it, how would you live with yourself?

7. Platform Responsibility and Regulatory Vacuum

The influencer economy operates in a regulatory desert. There is no law requiring disclosure. There is no agency monitoring payments. There is no penalty for undisclosed political advertising. Verified Fact

What Nigerian Law Says

The Electoral Act 2022 caps presidential campaign spending at ₦5 billion and requires financial disclosures to INEC ⁵⁵⁷[^dim03^]. But these rules were written for a pre-digital era. They assume campaigns buy billboards, not broadcast lists. They assume expenses leave receipts, not cash in restaurant meetings.

ARCON (Advertising Regulatory Council of Nigeria) announced in 2022 that influencers must obtain approval before sharing advertising content ⁵²⁹[^dim03^]. However, implementation is widely viewed as impractical. As one influencer noted: "The country has a way of overcomplicating simple things and seizing every opportunity to frustrate everyone to a point where stuffing corrupt people's pockets is the only way to not wait months" ⁵²⁹[^dim03^].

Political advertising occupies a deliberate gray zone. Campaign strategists pay influencers in cash, making the spending virtually untraceable. The gap is structural: INEC monitors ballot boxes, not broadcast lists. ARCON vets jingles, not hashtags. The EFCC prosecutes financial crimes, not influence operations. Research Analysis

What the Platforms Do — and Don't Do

Verified Fact The EU EOM noted that "notably Twitter's engagement on information integrity has been negligible" during the 2023 election ⁵⁵⁸[^dim03^]. Elon Musk's takeover, which led to the closure of Twitter's Africa headquarters in Ghana and the firing of nearly all staff, "raised concerns about the platform's capacity to tackle misinformation in Africa" ⁵⁵⁰[^dim03^]. CDD research found that "short-staffed social media companies are largely failing to respond to, label or takedown user reports of political misinformation and disinformation on their platforms" ³¹⁴[^dim03^].

Then came January 2025.

Verified Fact Meta announced it was ending its third-party fact-checking program. More than 100 fact-checking organizations under the IFCN condemned the decision, warning it would "undermine online accuracy and have real-world consequences" ³²⁵[^dim01^]. Shirley Ewang, a specialist at Gatefield, warned: "We noted that social media platforms like Facebook and WhatsApp, with tens of millions of Nigerian users, remain central to the country's information ecosystem and can be weaponised without adequate fact-checking and content moderation." ³²⁵[^dim01^]

This is the platform ecosystem in which Nigeria's 2027 election will occur: no fact-checking, minimal content moderation, encrypted distribution channels, and a regulatory framework written before WhatsApp existed.

The Global Context

Nigeria is not unique. The Tech Global Institute found that "more than 80 percent of reviewed political content across platforms bearing no disclosure notice" across Nigeria, India, Bangladesh, Philippines, and Kenya ⁵⁶²[^dim03^]. Interviewed influencers across all countries "indicated that they have all created political content in exchange for financial compensation from political parties or their intermediaries" ⁵⁶²[^dim03^].

But Nigeria's combination of weak institutions, cash-based economy, ethnic fragmentation, and zero disclosure requirements creates conditions that the Tech Global Institute described as enabling influencers "exploiting their voice and reach to disseminate hyper partisan messages and misleading narratives, distorting public discourse and undermining democratic processes" ⁵⁶²[^dim03^].

8. The CCIDM Framework: Five Red Flags for Paid Political Content

How do you know if the post you're reading was paid for? The CCIDM framework — created by the CDD and adapted here for citizen use — provides five red flags [^dim03^].

What This Means For You

Before you retweet that political post, run the CCIDM check: Is it coordinated? Is the position sudden? Is the engagement disproportionate? Is the source distant? Is the messaging too perfect? If three or more red flags are present, you are not looking at an opinion. You are looking at an advertisement without a label.

9. The Lie and The Truth

THE LIE: "Influencers share their genuine opinions. If they support a candidate, it's because they truly believe in them."

THE DECONSTRUCTION: The entire business model is built on disguising payment as authenticity. Political PR firms write scripts. Influencers paste and post. Followers believe they are receiving a friend's recommendation; they are receiving a commercial without a disclosure label. When Tunde Ednut supported Peter Obi, he was forced to publicly deny being paid, asking: "How Peter Obi wey no dey give money wan give me since 2023 election till date?" ⁵⁴⁷[^dim03^]. The very need for such denials proves that suspicion is now the default — and that the suspicion is justified. Research Analysis

THE TRUTH: Most political posts from major influencers are paid advertisements without labels. The most authentic-looking support is the most expensive to manufacture. Your favorite influencer's passionate thread may have been drafted by a PR intern, edited by a campaign manager, and posted after a cash transfer cleared. And you will never know — because no Nigerian law requires them to tell you. Verified Fact

10. ACTION: What You Can Do

The Personal Audit

1. Review who you follow. Go through your following list. For each political influencer, ask: When did they start supporting their current candidate? Did they ever support someone else? Did they disclose any payment? If the timeline is suspicious, unfollow.

2. Apply the CCIDM framework. Before sharing any political post, run the five red flags. Coordination. Currency. Intensity. Deniability. Messaging. Three flags = paid content.

3. Demand disclosure. Comment on political posts: "Was this paid for?" The question alone creates accountability pressure. Influencers who are genuinely organic will answer. Those who are paid will block you — which is its own answer.

4. Support independent media. Subscribe to Premium Times, The Cable, Peoples Gazette, and Dubawa. These organizations are funded by readers and grants, not political campaigns. Their survival is your information security.

The Collective Pressure

1. Report undisclosed political ads. On every platform, use the reporting tools. Flag political content that lacks disclosure. Even if platforms don't act, the volume of reports creates a record.

2. Advocate for the Political Influencer Disclosure Act. Nigeria needs a law requiring all paid political content to carry #PaidPartnership or #PoliticalAd labels. Contact your National Assembly representative. Demand it.

3. Shun the non-disclosers. The influencer economy runs on attention. When influencers who fail to disclose political payments lose followers, they lose negotiating power with campaigns. Your unfollow is a civic act.

The Community Defense

1. Train your circle. Share the CCIDM framework with your WhatsApp groups. Not as a broadcast — as a conversation. The only defense against the influencer economy is a population that can see the strings.

Before you believe, verify. Before you share, ask who paid for the post. Your trust is the most valuable currency in Nigerian politics — and it is being spent without your knowledge.

Cold Open: Adaobi, 29, Dubawa Fact-Checker

February 25, 2027. Election night.

Adaobi Nwankwo has not slept in thirty-six hours. She sits in the Dubawa situation room in Abuja — a converted conference center with twelve laptops, three wall-mounted monitors, and the persistent hum of a generator arguing with itself. The room smells of instant noodles, anxiety, and the ozone scent of overheating electronics.

She is twenty-nine years old. She has a master's degree in journalism from the University of Lagos. She earns ₦180,000 per month — approximately $120 — to be lied to for a living.

By 8 p.m., she has verified twelve claims.

Claim one: "INEC server hacked, results being manipulated live." False. The image was from a 2019 Kenya election.

Claim two: "Military deployed to stop voting in Anambra." False. The video was from a 2021 exercise in Kaduna. Reverse image search, 4 minutes.

Claim three: "Candidate X has withdrawn — vote for Y instead." False. The "withdrawal letter" used the wrong letterhead font.

Claim four: "Fulani herdsmen massacred twenty voters in Plateau." Partially true. An incident occurred, but the death count was inflated from three to twenty. The image was from a 2018 Cameroon conflict.

Claims five through twelve: false, false, misleading, false, false, fabricated, false, partially true.

By midnight, she is at claim twenty-three.

Her fingers cramp from switching between browser tabs — Google reverse image search, InVID verification, WhatsApp web, Dubawa's database. She drinks her fourth cup of Nescafé and it does nothing.

Claim nineteen was a voice note in Hausa — a man claiming to be an INEC official announcing polling station closures in the North. Forwarded 340 times before it reached Dubawa's desk. Adaobi called Amina, their Hausa-speaking fact-checker. The accent was wrong — too southern for Kano. No ambient sounds of a polling station. Fabricated. The correction reached 2,400 people. The original reached an estimated 180,000.

By 2 a.m., she has processed thirty-one claims.

Her phone buzzes. Unknown number.

"Is this the Dubawa girl?" A male voice, calm and practiced. "I saw your so-called fact-check about the hospital project in Rivers State. We know where you live. We know your mother is in Enugu. It would be a shame if something happened to her."

The line goes dead.

Adaobi stares at her phone. Her hands do not shake — not yet. That comes at 5 a.m., when the adrenaline drains. She writes it in the security log. Dubawa's protocol: document, report, continue working. Seven more claims in the queue.

Claim forty-one: A video of ballot stuffing in Lagos.

She uses InVID to extract keyframes. Geolocates the building — distinctive green and white INEC office paint in Ikeja. Checks metadata. Calls a local observer. The video was filmed in 2019, not 2027. Deceptive context. Published.

Forty-one claims. Thirty-four false or misleading. Seven true or mostly true.

The true ones matter too. A claim that a Borno polling station had insufficient ballot papers — verified through three observer reports. Adaobi published it as "Correct." Fact-checkers do not only debunk. They verify — affirming truth as fiercely as exposing lies.

At 3:47 a.m., her phone buzzes.

Not a threat. A WhatsApp from her mother, Mama Nwankwo, in Enugu:

"Adaobi, my daughter. Someone sent this to our church group. Is it true?"

Attached: an image claiming the Labour Party candidate has been disqualified by the Supreme Court. Official-looking — court seal, legal language, signature. Forwarded forty-three times before reaching her mother's church group.

Adaobi stares at the message.

Her mother — who forwards prayer chains and rice-cooking tips and "good morning" images with flowers — did not forward this one. She paused. She asked.

Adaobi checks it. Outdated Supreme Court seal — replaced after 2023 reforms. The case number does not exist. The font is Arial; the Court uses Times New Roman. Fabricated.

She types: "Mama, it is false. The seal is wrong. The case number is fake. Do not share it."

Three minutes pass. Then:

"I didn't forward it. I waited for you. I told the group: 'My daughter checks facts. Let me ask her first.'"

Adaobi stares at the screen. Her vision blurs. She does not cry often — forty-one claims in twelve hours builds a callus around the heart. But now, at 4 a.m., with cold Nescafé and a coughing generator, the tears come.

One person waited.

One person, in one church group, in one town in Enugu State, looked at a lie and chose to pause.

This is how revolutions start. Not with manifestos. With one woman in a WhatsApp group who decided to wait for her daughter before pressing forward.

By 6 a.m., Adaobi has verified forty-seven claims.

Two threats. And one person who waited.

That is enough to keep fighting.

The Fact-Checking Ecosystem: Nigeria's Truth Brigade

Nigeria's fact-checking infrastructure grew from one organization in 2016 to a coalition of specialized operations by 2024 ²⁸. These are Nigerian journalists working impossible hours for inadequate pay, in a country where calling a politician a liar can get you killed.

Dubawa — "West Africa's independent verification and fact-checking project" — operates under the Centre for Journalism Innovation and Development (CJID). Founded in 2018, it has expanded to five West African countries ¹². During the 2023 elections, Dubawa led the Nigerian Fact-Checkers' Coalition, deploying 31 members across situation rooms in Lagos and Abuja ⁴. In 2024, they launched an AI-powered WhatsApp chatbot that answered over 1,100 requests from 250+ unique users within months, cutting verification response time from 13-15 seconds to 5 seconds ⁶.

Africa Check opened its Lagos office in 2016 — the first dedicated fact-checking operation in Nigeria. They have fact-checked over 1,700 claims, with a lean team of about four permanent staff ⁷². During COVID-19, they launched the #KeepTheFactsGoing campaign on WhatsApp and community radio in six local languages ⁷. David Ajikobi, Nigeria Editor: "People don't see that they are part of the problem and they are also part of the solution" ².

FactCheckHub, established in 2020 by ICIR, received a $25,000 Google/YouTube grant and a 100,000 Euro German Embassy grant for media literacy work ⁸. They developed the "Get It Right" trivia game — gamified verification training ⁸.

AFP Fact Check has forced official apologies for false claims — something "that would have been unthinkable in the time before journalistic fact-checking became an integral part of news operations" ⁹.

Verified Fact The Nigerian Fact-Checkers' Coalition fact-checked 127 claims during the 2023 elections. Of 83 presidential election claims, 63% (52 claims) were found to be incorrect ⁴.

Historical Interpretation The concentration of fact-checking capacity in English creates implicit geographic and class bias — English-literate, urban, younger Nigerians receive the bulk of verification services while the majority is excluded.

Impact: Do Fact-Checks Actually Change Minds?

This is the question that keeps fact-checkers awake at 4 a.m.

A landmark 2024 study in the American Political Science Review found that sustained exposure to fact-checks helps inoculate citizens against misinformation ¹¹. Receiving fact-checks "persistently increased respondents' ability to discern truth from falsehood" while increasing skepticism toward conspiracy theories. Crucially, "greater discernment primarily reflected skepticism of false content, whereas confidence in true content was not systematically altered" ¹¹.

The study also found the mode of dissemination matters enormously: "the quickly-consumable WhatsApp text message consistently produced larger effects on discernment than the more involved long and short podcasts" ¹¹. For WhatsApp-dominant Nigeria, this is revolutionary — the right message on the right platform works.

In Nigeria specifically, a 2024 study found respondents perceived fact-checking as moderately effective (M=3.69, p<.001), though "concerns about perceived bias and limited reach were frequently expressed" ¹².

But the reach problem is devastating. "Misinformation is particularly acute on closed platforms like WhatsApp and Telegram, where content is shared within private groups, making it difficult to monitor and fact-check" ⁶. WhatsApp "functions as a negative predictor of fact-checking acceptance because its closed nature strengthens reliance on peer trust over institutional trust" ¹².

Civic Question If a fact-check reaches 2,400 people but the lie reached 180,000, is the fact-check a failure — or the only thing standing between those 2,400 people and total information chaos?

Media Literacy: The Immunization Strategy

If fact-checking is emergency surgery, media literacy is vaccination. The question is whether Nigeria can achieve herd immunity before the next epidemic of lies.

A 2025 Abuja survey found that 75% encountered fake news frequently (daily or weekly). Most critically, only 20% consistently verify news before consuming or sharing ¹⁵. Nearly half (45%) rarely or never verify. About 50% had little or no awareness of media literacy programs ¹⁵.

The generational vulnerability is stark. A CDD/University of Birmingham study found that parents and grandparents are the biggest sharers of misinformation in Nigeria, owing to "lack of digital literacy, reliance on trusted social networks (which WhatsApp replicates online), and belief in the scientific neutrality of technology" ¹⁸.

One young Nigerian told researchers: "Our parents are highly protective. That's one of the reasons why they are victims of unverified broadcast messages. Sadly enough, the BC also comes from someone they trust like pastors, alfas, friends" ¹⁸. Another: "Yes oo, I have blocked them, make person get peace" ¹⁸.

A septuagenarian in Oyo, Pa Lasisi Adewale, sees it differently: "There is always an element of truth in broadcast messages. These messages extend caution and save lives" ¹⁸.

This is the immunization challenge. You cannot vaccinate people who do not believe they are sick.

WHAT THIS MEANS FOR YOU

If you are reading this book, you are likely among the 20% who verify — or aspire to be. But verification is not a personality trait. It is a skill set. The rest of this chapter gives you that skill set. Read it. Practice it. Teach it to someone older than you.

WhatsApp Forwarding Behavior: The Viral Engine

To stop the machine, you must understand the engine. A netnographic study of 16 Nigerian WhatsApp groups identified the patterns ¹⁹:

The "be first to share" syndrome: "Many participants demonstrated a penchant for forwarding for being the first to share sensational posts... The pressure to be the first to share makes it difficult for them to go through the fact-checking process before reposting" ¹⁹.

Fabrication for clout: Some "created and shared information that they knew fully well to be false" — "to chase clout or gain attention" or "out of malice" ¹⁹.

Exaggerated amplification: Participants "exaggerating and unduly amplifying factual information in a way that makes it lose its original meaning" to align with "existing beliefs, prejudices or interests" ¹⁹.

The closed-loop problem: "Closed networks, such as WhatsApp, are particularly resistant to external fact-checks because peer credibility often outweighs corrections from outside sources" ¹².

The deletion loophole: A message shared at 1:30 a.m. to 120 participants and deleted after 10 minutes may have been read and reposted by 12 people — 10% of members — before anyone could correct it ¹⁹.

Research Analysis

A message shared at 1:30 a.m. WhatsApp's encryption is not the problem. Human wiring is: we forward before we think because brains are optimized for social connection, not information accuracy. The solution is rewiring the social cost of forwarding without thinking.

The Backfire Effect: When Corrections Make Things Worse

The hardest truth: sometimes, telling someone they are wrong makes them believe it more.

A 2024 study found that while corrective effects are more common, backfire effects occur when corrections challenge deeply held beliefs or identity-aligned positions ²⁰. In Nigeria, this takes culturally specific dimensions ¹²:

• Ethnic identity: Correcting a false claim about a candidate from one's own ethnic group may be perceived as an attack on the ethnic group itself
• Religious alignment: Fact-checking claims that align with religious beliefs may be seen as anti-faith
• Generational dynamics: Older Nigerians believe forwarded messages contain "an element of truth" — corrections seem dismissive
• Source skepticism: Fact-checkers from perceived "southern" organizations correcting claims about "northern" politicians trigger automatic dismissal

"Many users either ignore or resist fact-checks because of deep-seated distrust in institutions, political partisanship, and low media literacy. Corrections even reinforce prior beliefs" ¹².

The South African study found "only the empathetic version of the podcast increased discernment as much as the simple text messages, which suggests that edutainment is more effective when it includes emotive appeals" ¹¹.

This changes everything. The most effective fact-check does not scream "FALSE!" It says: "I understand why this is concerning. Here is what we found."

Civic Question When you correct someone in your family group and they double down, is the problem the facts you shared — or the way you shared them?

Technology Tools: The Fact-Checker's Arsenal

The Dubawa WhatsApp Chatbot

Save this number: +234 903 300 0696. Send "Hi." The chatbot verifies claims, delivers latest fact-checks, and reports new claims ²³. It uses a large language model "for natural language processing" ⁶.

Verified Fact The Dubawa chatbot reduced verification time from 13-15 seconds to 5 seconds and resolved 85% of 1,100+ requests accurately ⁶.

Reverse Image Search

• Google Reverse Image Search (images.google.com): Upload an image to find where else it appears. A "2027" image that appeared in 2019 is misused.
• TinEye (tineye.com): Timeline features showing earliest instances online.
• Yandex Images: More effective for non-English and African content.

Video Verification

InVID & WeVerify (invid-project.eu): Browser plugin extracting keyframes, performing reverse searches, checking metadata, and magnifying manipulation artifacts.

Geolocation

Google Earth / Street View: Match landmarks, building shapes, road patterns. SunCalc.org: Calculate sun position — if shadows indicate morning but the claim says evening, the timestamp is false.

WHAT THIS MEANS FOR YOU

You do not need to be a journalist to verify. You need: (1) the Dubawa chatbot in your phone, (2) the habit of reverse-image-searching political images before forwarding, and (3) the discipline to wait five minutes. Five minutes. That is the difference between being a weapon and being a shield.

The S.M.L. SAHARA Verification Framework

The five-step verification protocol for the person who receives a political claim and needs to check it before sharing.

S — STOP. Do not forward. Do not react. The lie depends on your speed. Deny it your urgency.

M — MATCH. Does this match what you know from credible sources? Cross-reference with at least two independent credible sources.

L — LOOK. Use the tools. Reverse image search. Dubawa chatbot. Google the exact claim text — fact-checks may already exist.

S — SCAN. Scan for manipulation. Images: inconsistent lighting, blurry edges, mismatched shadows. Videos: audio-lip mismatch, jump cuts. Text: ALL CAPS, excessive exclamation marks, emotional manipulation.

A — ASSESS. Who created this? What is their track record? "Forwarded many times" is not a source — it is a warning.

H — HOLD. Wait 24 hours before sharing emotionally charged political content. Most viral claims peak at 4 hours and are debunked within 12.

A — ASK. Ask someone you trust who verifies. Adaobi's mother asked her daughter. Who is your Adaobi?

R — REPORT. Report confirmed false content to group admins, platforms, and fact-checkers. Each report protects the next person.

A — ACT. Share corrections with the same energy you share exposes. If you forwarded something false, post the correction in the same groups.

Research Analysis S.M.L. SAHARA requires discipline in a culture that rewards speed. But forwarding without thinking is how The Vote-Wasting Machine wins. Every time you follow these steps, you break a chain that would have reached hundreds.

The L.I.F.E. Framework: Locate, Investigate, Find, Evaluate

For deeper verification — the kind Adaobi does at 3 a.m.:

L — LOCATE the claim's origin. Every piece of information has a birthplace. Find it. If you received a screenshot, find the original tweet. If a voice note, ask who recorded it. If an image, reverse-search until you find the earliest instance. Claims without identifiable origins have no credibility.

I — INVESTIGATE the source. Who created this? What is their track record? What do they gain if you believe it? A WhatsApp forward from "Forwarded many times" has no accountability. A verified newsroom carries different weight than an anonymous Telegram channel.

F — FIND corroborating evidence. Does any other credible source report the same thing? The three-source rule: find three independent credible sources before treating any political claim as true.

E — EVALUATE before you share. The gate. Ask: Is this true? Is it complete? Would I bet my vote on it? Would I say this to my mother? If the answer to any is no, do not share.

Civic Question If you applied L.I.F.E. to the last five political messages you forwarded, how many would survive the evaluation gate?

The Three-Question Test (Thirty Seconds)

When a voice note arrives and your uncle is already typing "This is serious!!!", you have thirty seconds:

Question 1: Who made this?
"I don't know" or "Forwarded many times" = unverified. Treat accordingly.

Question 2: What evidence supports it?
"My friend said" or "it's all over the internet" = no evidence. Anecdotes are not evidence. Virality is not evidence.

Question 3: What do other sources say?
If no credible newsroom, government agency, or fact-checker confirms it, wait. The truth does not expire. Lies depend on speed.

Pass all three? Consider sharing. Fail any one? Keep scrolling.

Challenges: What Is Holding Fact-Checkers Back

The Funding Crisis

"The lack of adequate financial resources presents a substantial barrier for fact-checking organisations" ²⁴. Nigerian fact-checkers "that have been in operation for a duration exceeding five years have faced funding challenges" ²⁴. Meta's January 2025 decision to end third-party fact-checking globally raised existential questions about the future of the entire ecosystem ²⁵³⁰.

The Language Barrier

"Disinformation flourishes in other languages without us paying attention to it" ⁶. With 500+ languages and fact-checks primarily in English, the vast majority of citizens are excluded. Africa Check produces content in six local languages ⁷ — a fraction of Nigeria's diversity.

Political Pressure

"A fact checker with Africa Check reported that he came under accusation from politically exposed persons... with allegations that he tagged politicians and public officials liars" ²⁶. The Federal Government proposed spending 336 billion Naira on "tackling fake news" — criticized as a ruse to stifle free speech ²⁶.

The AI Disinformation Wave

The 2023 elections may have been "the world's first instance of a country's democratic process being marred by" AI deepfakes at scale ²⁷ — including fake celebrity endorsements of Peter Obi, cloned voice notes, and manipulated audio of Atiku Abubakar ²⁷. Experts predict "more local and convincing AI political fakes" ahead ²⁵.

Forensic Witness: Kemi Oladiran, Fact-Checker Facing Threats

Kemi Oladiran, 31, has worked with Dubawa for three years. She has verified over 200 claims. She has been threatened three times. She still does the work.

"The first threat was indirect. A governor's aide called my editor and said we should 'reconsider' a fact-check about his principal's healthcare claims. We published anyway. The governor claimed twelve new primary healthcare centers. We found evidence for two. The other ten were renovations or projects existing only on paper.

"The second threat came after publication. My phone rang at 2 a.m., 3 a.m. Unknown numbers. Heavy breathing. Then a text: 'You think you're safe because you write for Dubawa? Everyone has a price or a weakness. We will find yours.'

"I didn't tell my mother. She would have begged me to quit. I told my editor. Dubawa has security protocols — we documented everything, consulted a lawyer, and I relocated temporarily to my sister's place.

"The third threat was the worst. Someone showed up at my parents' house in Ibadan. He didn't do anything — just asked neighbors about me, showed them my picture, and left. That was enough. My father called me crying. He had never cried in front of me. He said, 'Kemi, this country does not reward truth-tellers.'

"He is not wrong. The governor never publicly retracted his claim. He stopped mentioning the twelve centers in speeches. His supporters attacked me on Twitter for months — called me a PDP agent, a paid hack, a woman who should stay in the kitchen.

"So why do I keep doing it? Because of the one time it worked. After we published, a woman in that state — I will never know her name — messaged Dubawa. She had been planning to vote for the governor because of those health centers. She has a sick child. Our fact-check changed her vote.

"One woman. One vote. That is not nothing. That is everything.
