Ebenezer Obey

Chief Commander Ebenezer Remilekun Aremu Olasupo Obey-Fabiyi (born 1942), known as Ebenezer Obey, is a legendary Jùjú musician whose career spans seven decades. Born in Idogo, Ogun State, Obey taught himself guitar and formed his first band in 1964. His smooth, melodic style contrasted with King Sunny Adé's more percussive approach, creating a friendly rivalry that elevated Jùjú music. Obey's lyrics incorporate Yoruba proverbs, Christian themes, and social commentary. His " miliki" system revolutionized Jùjú, introducing slower tempos and harmony vocals. Albums like "Current Affairs" and "Solution" addressed contemporary issues. Obey's international tours introduced Jùjú to global audiences. He received MFR (Member of the Federal Republic) and numerous traditional titles. At over 80, Ebenezer Obey remains active, proving longevity in Nigerian music requires both talent and adaptability.
