Lekki Conservation Centre is a 78-hectare nature reserve in Lagos, protecting the region's biodiversity. Established by Chevron and the Nigerian Conservation Foundation in 1990, it features diverse ecosystems including swamp forests, savannah, and wetlands. The center is home to monkeys, crocodiles, snakes, and over 100 bird species. Its main attraction is the 401-meter-long canopy walkway, the longest in Africa, suspended 22 meters above ground offering spectacular views. The center provides environmental education, guided nature walks, and eco-tourism experiences. It serves as Lagos's green lung, offering respite from urban congestion while promoting conservation awareness. The center demonstrates that development and nature conservation can coexist.
CITY’S GREEN LUNG:
Lekki Conservation Centre protects 78 hectares of mangrove swamp, savannah grassland, and secondary forest within Lagos’ bustling metropolis. Established by the Nigerian Conservation Foundation and Chevron in 1990, it serves as an urban biodiversity refuge.
SIGNATURE ATTRACTIONS:
Visitors traverse the 401-metre canopy walkway—the longest in Africa—viewing monkeys, peacocks, crocodiles, and a variety of bird species from a 22-metre vantage point. Elevated boardwalks minimise human impact on fragile habitats.
ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION HUB:
The centre hosts school excursions, corporate volunteer days, and citizen-science programmes. Its Nature Station exhibits climate change impacts, while the Tree House offers panoramic views and meditation spaces.
CONSERVATION IMPACT:
Scientists use the reserve to monitor urbanisation’s effect on wetlands and to pilot mangrove restoration. Community outreach includes coastal cleanup campaigns and training artisans to produce eco-friendly souvenirs.
