Event
The Osun-Osogbo Festival is an annual two-week celebration honoring Osun, the Yoruba goddess of fertility, water, and prosperity. Held in August along the Osun River in Osogbo, the festival dates back centuries. Pilgrims from around the world come to make wishes and offerings to the goddess. The festival culminates with the Arugba (votary maid) carrying a calabash on her head to the grove, accompanied by priests, chiefs, and devotees. Rituals include divination, dancing, and sacrifices. The Osun-Osogbo Grove is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The festival demonstrates the enduring vitality of Yoruba traditional religion and attracts both worshippers and cultural tourists.
